Lincoln Nautilus: Supplemental Restraint System / Side Curtain Airbag. Removal and Installation

Removal

  WARNING: The following procedure prescribes critical repair steps required for correct restraint system operation during a crash. Follow all notes and steps carefully. Failure to follow step instructions may result in incorrect operation of the restraint system and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

  1. Depower the SRS .
    Refer to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System, General Procedures).
  1. Lower the headliner.
    Refer to: Headliner - Lowering (501-05 Interior Trim and Ornamentation, Removal and Installation).
    1. Detatch the wire harness retainer.
    1. Remove the bolts and the bracket.
      Torque: 80 lb.in (9 Nm)
    1. Release the retainers and remove the bracket.
  1. Disconnect the side curtain airbag electrical connector.
  1. NOTE: Follow the unique instructions or graphic for this step in installation.

    Remove the side curtain airbag rear screws.
  1. NOTE: Follow the unique instructions or graphic for this step in installation.

    Remove the side curtain airbag center screws.
  1. NOTE: Follow the unique instructions or graphic for this step in installation.

    Remove the side curtain airbag front screws.
  1. Detach the pin-type retainers from the A-pillar.
  1. Slide the side curtain airbag upward and out from the A-pillar and disengage the T-tab from the sheet metal.
  1. Feed the side curtain airbag hanger out from between the A-pillar and the A-pillar bracket.
  1. Disengage the retainers with the side curtain airbag.
  1. Disengage the side curtain airbag.

  1. Remove the side curtain airbag.
    1. Remove the pin-type retainer.
    1. Disengage the T-tab from the sheet metal.
    1. Slide the side curtain airbag forward.
    1. Slide the side curtain airbag outward, disengaging the nut from the sheet metal and remove the side curtain airbag.

Installation

  WARNING: Incorrect repair techniques or actions can cause an accidental Supplemental Restraint System deployment. Make sure the restraint system is depowered before reconnecting the component. Refer to the Supplemental Restraint System depowering General Procedure in section 501-20B. Failure to precisely follow depowering instructions could result in serious personal injury from an accidental deployment.

  WARNING: Before installing a Safety Canopy® or side air curtain module, inspect the roofline for any damage. If necessary, the sheet metal must be reworked to its original condition and structural integrity. Install new fasteners if damaged and remove foreign material. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the Safety Canopy® or side air curtain deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

NOTE: During installation, ensure that the side curtain airbag is not twisted 360 ° between attachment points.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Tighten the screws in the sequence shown.
    Torque: 62 lb.in (7 Nm)
  1. Repower the SRS .
    Refer to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering (501-20B Supplemental Restraint System, General Procedures).

    Changing a Flat Tire

    WARNING: If the tire pressure monitor sensor becomes damaged it may not function.

    Note: The use of tire sealant may damage your tire pressure monitoring system and should only be used in roadside emergencies. If you must use a sealant, use the Tire Mobility Kit sealant. Replace the tire pressure monitoring system sensor and valve stem on the wheel by an authorized dealer after use of the sealant.
